EXHAUST LEAK - EGR VALVE TO MANIFOLD JOINT

Bulletin Number - 0001

Issue - 2

Date - 09.05.2002

Model - Freelander

Affected Range - All vehicles with L Series diesel engine

Re-Issue Information - Improved specification screws, EGR valve to manifold introduced - PARTS INFORMATION amended.

Problem -

EXHAUST LEAK - EGR VALVE TO MANIFOLD JOINT

The customer complains of an exhaust leak or noise from the engine compartment.

Cause

Leakage from the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve to exhaust manifold joint due to torque relaxation on the flange bolts.

Action

At VIN YA 526462 a revised assembly process for the EGR valve and associated parts was introduced. This process includes an increased torque setting for the EGR valve to exhaust manifold fixings, which should be used for all future repairs where the EGR valve to exhaust manifold joint is disturbed. Where gasket failure is confirmed, refer to Workshop Manual repair number 17.45.01 for the repair procedure, noting the following changes:

  • Replace the EGR valve to manifold gasket, the EGR valve to cooler gasket, two flange head screws and two Torx head screws, adding spring washers to all four screws. Refer to illustration and PARTS INFORMATION.
  • Tighten the two EGR valve to manifold screws LYP000050L initially to 10Nm and finally to the new torque setting of 32Nm.

  • Tighten the two EGR valve to cooler screws to the original torque setting of 25Nm.
