Re-Issue Information

Problem -

THE SATELLITE NAVIGATION UNIT SHOWS THE MESSAGE "GPS MODULE ERROR" INTERMITTENTLY ON THE SCREEN, WHILE PERFORMING THE INITIAL CALIBRATION ON A NEW VEHICLE OR SERVICE REPLACEMENT. THIS IS NOT A FAULT CONDITION.

Cause

The message "GPS MODULE ERROR" will be shown, alternating approximately every minute with various numbers on the screen, until the unit is able to obtain a firm positional fix from the GPS satellites.

Action

The correct calibration & software disc installation procedure as advised on a previous Technical Bulletin 0038, should be followed, with the vehicle parked outside with a clear view of the sky, unobstructed by trees, buildings etc. Once the unit has obtained an accurate positional fix, and the calibration drive has been performed, the "GPS MODULE ERROR" message should not reappear.

NOTE: If, after calibration, the vehicle is subsequently moved with the ignition switched off, or with the GPS antenna obstructed - for example after a tow or transporter recovery, or a train or ferry journey - the "GPS MODULE ERROR" message may be shown again, until the vehicle has again obtained a positional fix. In this case, normal driving for a few miles, or leaving the vehicle outside with the navigation unit switched on for approximately 20 minutes will resolve this. It is not necessary to repeat the calibration drive.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

NOTE: The "GPS MODULE ERROR" message should not be confused with the message "GPS ANTENNA FAULTl" If this message appears it means the unit cannot detect the GPS antenna. The most likely cause of this message is a faulty connection or damage to the co-axial cable between the Satellite Navigation head unit and the GPS antenna on the roof. This message will also appear if the GPS antenna is faulty.

NOTE: The GPS antenna is mounted on the rear of the roof on Discovery, and contained in the base of the roof-mounted radio aerial on Freelander.

NOTE: If during the calibration process the unit appears to lock-up after inserting the disc for the first time (Step 9 of Technical Bulletin 0038), check that the correct disc is being used. If the correct disc is being used, the unit needs to be restarted to continue the calibration process. With the correct disc inserted, press and hold multifunction button 1, multifunction button 3, and the TP button at the same time for 2 seconds. The unit will restart, and the calibration process will continue with Step 10 of Technical Bulletin 0038.
