Freelander - Engine Idle Speed High

ENGINE IDLE SPEED HIGH / HDC LIGHT ON - VARIOUS

Bulletin Number - 0008

Issue - 2

Date - 02.09.1998

Model - Freelander 1.8

Affected Range - All vehicles with K Series petrol engines up to VIN WA 626910

Re-Issue Information - Incorrect VIN supplied in affected range.

Problem -

ENGINE IDLE SPEED HIGH / HDC LIGHT ON - VARIOUS

Either or both of the following symptoms:

Cause

Either throttle body manufacturing error or various causes identified in ACTION section.

Action

Test vehicle to confirm condition exists as described above. Before proceeding with this bulletin, refer to earlier bulletin - ENGINE IDLE SPEED ERRATIC (Fuel section - 0007). If satisfied that the earlier bulletin is not applicable to this condition, proceed with the following checks:

VEHICLES WITH HILL DESCENT CONTROL (HDC) ONLY

Symptom: High idle and HDC light on

Using TestBook, read the Fault codes held in the ABS ECU. A fault code may appear which reads:

‘HISTORIC/CURRENT FAULT RECORDED, ‘FAULT RESERVED, CONTACT LR SERVICE’ on screen - ‘DDWF0000 LISTFAULTSA’.

If this code does appear, contact your help desk for advice:

UK dealers only should contact TestBook help desk on Tel: 01865 746699 or Fax: 01865 746653.

Dealers outside the UK, should contact their National Sales Company or Import Distributor.

Your help desk will send a new disc DRGABS1 which can then be used to read the reserved code.

If new disc DRGABS1 then displays fault code ‘STICKING THROTTLE DETECTED’, follow the instructions below for ALL VEHICLES after clearing the ‘Sticking throttle detected’ fault code.

NOTE: The need to contact help desk is a temporary requirement and will not be necessary following release of TestBook CD DRG0005 which will then allow fault codes to be read and cleared.

If other HDC codes are stored, follow instructions as guided by TestBook before proceeding.

ALL VEHICLES

Symptom: High idle with reluctance to drop to normal controlled idle speed

Checks with engine stationary:

a) Check that all engine management vacuum pipes have been fitted correctly and not leaking.

b) Check that all stepper motor, idle air control valve and throttle potentiometer electrical connectors are fully latched.

c) Check that throttle cable is not kinked or has no sharp curves along its length. If suspect, re-position cable to produce smoother curves (illustration 1, RHD vehicle shown).

d) Check that primary throttle lever mechanism has free travel and not fouling. Check also that smaller lever on opposite side is not fouling breather hose clip. Rectify as required. If clip is fouling rotate so that clip ears are away from lever.

e) Check that the correct air intake duct to throttle body clip is fitted. The correct clip is a spring band type (illustration 2). If an incorrect clip has been fitted in service, i.e. a worm drive type, the throttle body will almost certainly have become distorted as a result, also necessitating replacement. The correct clip part number is MYC 100320, throttle body assembly part number MHB 101470L.

If throttle body requires replacement, refer to Workshop Manual repair number 19.22.45. Ignore following checks and retest vehicle to confirm idle is now normal. If correct clip was fitted, continue with following checks.

f) Temporarily disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle lever and check that throttle pedal returns freely. If the pedal appears stiff or alternatively falls under its own weight indicating return spring failure, the pedal box assembly will require replacement, see PARTS INFORMATION.

g) With throttle cable still disconnected from lever, open throttle slowly by hand using the lever, allow it to return very slowly to the closed position. The throttle lever should now be resting on the throttle stop adjusting screw. If it does not, replace the throttle body assembly, part number MHB 101470L.

If throttle body requires replacement, refer to Workshop Manual repair number 19.22.45. Ignore following checks and retest vehicle to confirm idle is now normal.

If check showed normal operation, refit and adjust throttle cable before proceeding with next checks.

NOTE: Confirm that plastic throttle cable adjuster nut is fully engaged in its abutment bracket. Push fully into bracket slot if not. Check that some slack exists in throttle cable inner, adjust as per Workshop Manual repair number 19.20.05.

Checks with engine running:

Ensure engine is fully warm

h) Engine idle appears normal: Open throttle slowly by hand using lever to increase engine speed to around 2000 rpm and allow it to return slowly to the closed position. If idle speed remains high, continue with following check.

i) Engine idle is high: Press throttle lever against the stop screw (illustration 3) to see if speed returns to normal idle. If lever can be pushed further, (movement may be only slight) and idle speed subsequently drops to normal, throttle sticking is confirmed. Replace throttle body assembly, part number MHB 101470L.

j) Engine idle remains high (no sticking detected) If idle remains high and it is confirmed that lever is contacting stop screw, carry out TestBook test and check stepper motor settings. Select ‘MEMS 1.9/SUB SYSTEM TEST/STEPPER MOTOR SETTING. Reset stepper motor as instructed. If stepper motor cannot be reset, select ‘STEPPER TEST’ and follow instructions.

As final confirmation that throttle is closing correctly, clamp off air by-pass hose (throttle body to IAC valve), idle speed should then drop or engine will stall. Retest vehicle to confirm idle is now normal.
