Problem -

WATER INGRESS INTO REAR OF VEHICLE - TAIL DOOR SEAL SPLIT

The tail door seal splits at the waist line of the vehicle.

Cause

Body design and durability of the tail door seal.

Action

A new improved seal has been introduced on production vehicles. The new seal is now available from Land Rover parts for fitment to earlier vehicles. In order for the new seal to be fitted a modification to the body must be carried out. Where a complaint of the above is confirmed, follow the rectification procedure below to the body and replace the tail door seal with new seal detailed in PARTS INFORMATION.

1. Remove rear screen side finishers, refer to Workshop Manual, Doors, repair number 76.43.81, for removal procedure.

2. Carefully release taildoor upper finisher from fixings.

3. Remove 5 screws securing taildoor upper finisher bracket to body

4. Remove bracket.

5. Remove 6 Torx screws securing luggage compartment carpet retainer and remove retainer.

6. Release 2 bolts securing taildoor check stay, ensure door does not open past its fully open position.

7. Remove old seal and sealant.

8. Remove a 15 mm length of flange from the corners at waist level from both sides, (as identified in illustration 1).

1

9. Repair paint finish as required. Where bare metal has been exposed, etch prime prior to painting.

10. Clean seal mounting faces with panel cleaner, (shaded area A in illustration 2).

2

11. Apply primer (e.g. Betawipe 4000) to the mounting face of the new seal in the areas arrowed (illustration 3).

3

12. Fit the new seal. As the seal shape is relatively complex, it is recommended that the following procedure is adopted:

a) Centralise the seal at top of aperture and push the LH corner into place.

b) With the aid of a rubber mallet, fit seal fully onto the top flange, working across to the RH corner.

c) Push the RH corner of the seal into place.

d) Work down one side of the seal from the top corner and with the aid of a rubber mallet, fit seal fully onto flange.

e) When the large flap at the waist line is reached, remove adhesive backing paper and press the flap into position to adhere to panel.

f) Repeat steps d) and e) for the other side.

g) To fit the seal to bottom flange, align paint mark on the seal to the middle carpet retainer screw hole and with the aid of a rubber mallet, fit seal fully onto flange working from the middle carpet retainer screw hole up to waist level. Repeat for the other side.

13. Using illustration 3 for reference, apply a bead of polyurethane sealant across the top of the seal to fill the gap between seal and body. Also apply a sealant bead down to and around the waist line flaps. Pay particular attention to the moulded areas on the seal.

14. Refit carpet retainer, taildoor check stay and finishers.
