KNOCK FROM FRONT DOORS - DOOR SKIN SEPARATION

Knock occurs when vehicle is driven over uneven surfaces or road humps. Condition may be more prevalent during hot weather conditions.

Cause

Front door outer skin separation from its inner panel. Condition occurs at door front edge adjacent to hinges. No other area of the door is affected.

Action

Confirmation of this condition may be possible by opening front door fully against the check strap. Inspect area described while loading door carefully against check strap. It should be possible to view door skin to inner panel separation at the clinched seam (the areas affected are circled in illustration).

Repair technique:

1. Remove door from vehicle (see Workshop Manual repair number 76.28.01/99).

2. Referring again to illustration, locally strip paint and disc down to bare metal the small areas circled at the inner clinched seam above and below each door hinge.

3. Using a MIG welder, carefully apply a small tack weld in the pre-prepared clinch areas. A minimal amount of heat should be applied to prevent damage to the outer skin.

3. Confirm taildoor operation is now satisfactory.

NOTE: Protect door trim panel and rubber seals etc. from heat source.

4. Clean weld and touch-in any exposed bare metal with an etch phosphate priming process. Finally re-paint repaired areas.

5. Refit door to vehicle and adjust on hinges to ensure profile and door closure is satisfactory.
