Problem -
HILL DESCENT CONTROL (HDC) INOPERATIVE
The customer complains that HDC cannot be selected and that the green HDC information light is inoperative.
Cause
Damage to the HDC switch multiplug and wiring harness as the result of a foul condition between the HDC switch and the centre console.
Action
To increase HDC switch / centre console clearance a new gear change lever incorporating a revised bend was introduced on production at VIN 1A 309479. This lever is now available for fitment to earlier vehicles, together with a replacement HDC switch.
Refer to PARTS INFORMATION and the following repair procedure.
1. Raise vehicle and remove bolt securing gear lever to selector rod. Collect seals, bushes and spacer.
2. Remove gear lever knob.
3. Release gear lever gaiter from base of HDC switch collar.
4. Remove flanged head bolt securing HDC switch to lever.
5. Disconnect multiplug and remove HDC switch.
6. Release clips securing gear lever gaiter to console and remove gaiter.
7. Remove gear lever draft excluder and inner gaiter.
8. Remove circlip and spacing washer securing gear lever.
9. Remove gear lever.
10.Ensure gear lever bush is clean and fit new gear lever.
11.Fit spacer and circlip to secure gear lever.
12. Fit gear lever inner gaiter and draft excluder.
13. Fit gear lever outer gaiter and secure clips to console.
NOTE: Freelander Millennium (Double M) Limited Editions have a leather gear lever outer gaiter which is attached to the base of the original rubber gaiter. The upper section of the rubber gaiter should have been cut away when the leather gaiter was fitted. Where a leather gaiter is fitted, examine the interior of the gaiter for a complete rubber gaiter. Illustration 1 shows a complete rubber gaiter which has been pulled out of the leather gaiter so that it can be cut away. Cut the rubber gaiter as shown in illustration 1, leaving only the rubber base is shown in illustration 2, for securing to the console.
14. Fit new HDC switch to gear lever and secure with flanged head bolt.
15. Connect multiplug and secure gear lever gaiter to HDC switch collar.
16. Fit gear lever knob. Screw fully down to stop on HDC switch assembly, approximately 11 to 12 turns.
17. Fit selector rod bushes, spacer and seals and connect selector rod. Fit and tighten bolt securing rod to gear lever and lower vehicle.
