Freelander - Off-Road Capability

Off-Road Capability

Freelander has been designed to be best in class with performance directly related to fitness for need. Building on its fifty years of expertise, its off-road capabilities have been designed to be best in class, considerable testing across 5 continents has been undertaken in developing the following features.

High mounted steering and suspension members

All steering and suspension members have been specifically designed, using Land Rover's considerable experience, to be high up and out of the way to reduce the risk of grounding in off-road usage.

High strength materials

The extensive use of high strength low weight materials in key areas of the body, especially suspension mounting and components, ensure maximum strength but low weight, contributing not only to vehicle durability but to performance and economy.

Approach and Departure angles

These are important measures of an off-road vehicle's ability to negotiate steep gradients and obstacles. Freelander's primarily on-road focus for its target customers does not require it to match Discovery or Range Rover, but its ability is still far above that of a conventional saloon. Traction permitting, the vehicle is capable of climbing, stopping and restarting on a 33% slope in both upward and downward facing mode. The standard ETC and HDC allowing this performance.

Approach and Departure angles

To ensure maximum protection of underbody components, the aluminium/composite sump guard protects the whole underside of the engine bay.

Recovery Loops

The recovery loops front and rear are both in an accessible position to enable recovery in the worst of conditions. They are designed to take a snatch load of 3 tonnes (almost twice the vehicle weight).

Axle articulation

Axle articulation is the ability of one axle to move - left wheel up right wheel down, or vice versa - relative to the chassis or the other axle. This is important in order to maximise tyre contact for good traction. Freelander is superior to both CRV and Rav 4, the other independent suspension small/medium 4WD rivals, with 180mm (7") articulation for the front ´axle´, and 204mm (8") for the rear ´axle´.
