DRIVE GEAR OIL CONTAMINATION - INCORRECT DIAGNOSIS
During certain repair situations, oil contamination in the area around the camshaft and fuel injection pump drive gears may cause the repairer to suspect that oil seals are leaking.
Cause
In the majority of instances, it is likely that oil has originated from the drive gears themselves. The oil is a combination of natural oil bleed (common with sintered type gears) and excess oil residue left behind from the gear manufacturing process.
Action
- Inspect the area behind the pulley to confirm that oil seals have not been leaking.
NOTE: a leaking seal will produce a distinct oil trail in a downward direction starting at the seal lip.
- If no distinctive oil trail is apparent, the source will almost certainly be from the drive gears as described in CAUSE above. Clean away oil contamination from drive gears and any adjacent components (excluding timing belts) with a suitable solvent.
Conclusion:
Oil mist may appear on the surface of the oil seals along with other adjacent components such as timing belt, this will not affect their performance in any way.
NO COMPONENTS SHOULD REQUIRE REPLACEMENT AS A RESULT OF THE DESCRIBED CONDITION, ANY RELATED CLAIMS MAY BE REJECTED.
