Problem

OIL LEAK FROM CRANKSHAFT REAR OIL SEAL

Cause

  • Ineffective sealing between seal and housing due to machining irregularities.
  • Seal lip wear due to lack of lubrication between seal and crankshaft.

Action

A modified oil seal is now available with improved outer sealing capabilities and a re-designed seal lip to improve seal to crankshaft lubrication. Modified seal (part number LUF100560L) must only be fitted using recently introduced sealant STC4171.

Procedure for rear oil seal replacement:

Remove

1. Remove engine flywheel, Workshop Manual repair number 12.53.07 refers.

2. Using a burr free flat ended screwdriver, ease crankshaft rear oil seal from cylinder block, (arrowed in illustration 1). Take care to not mark sealing surface on crankshaft.

Refit

1. Clean oil seal recess in cylinder block and running surface on crankshaft. It is essential that these areas are thoroughly clean, free of old sealant and dry. Do not lubricate oil seal prior to fitting.

2. Apply a 1.5mm bead of STC4171 liquid sealant to the new oil seal, (arrowed in illustration 2). Immediately position oil seal to cylinder block and fit oil seal replacer LRT-12-136.

3. Evenly tighten oil seal replacer bolts to press oil seal into cylinder block. Leave seal replacer in position for 1 minute.

4. Remove oil seal replacer.

5. Fit engine flywheel.
